My Teacher Julia Jones of Newborn Mothers.

Where it all began.

My Journey to becoming a Postpartum Doula

Let me take you back to February 2022 ~ just 12 months postpartum, dealing with De Quervain tenosynovitis (aka mum thumb) in both wrists, I knew I needed to pivot and upskill in a new direction from massage therapy, so l enrolled in a breastfeeding course for professionals with Julia Jones of Newborn Mothers. I absolutely loved it and felt compelled to learn even more! Since then, l've been hooked on Julia's postpartum education, which has blossomed into such a meaningful career shift I went on to complete her "Collective" doula training and later her latest Postpartum Education and Care Professional course. This had equipped me with evidence-based tools to provide exceptional care for mothers and helped me grow my business. So when Julia mentioned she was visiting Tasmania for a family holiday, I couldn't resist the chance to buy her a cup of coffee! But in true Ayla fashion, it turned into so much more.

I gathered some of the top postpartum professionals from northern Tasmania, and we met at Silos. I put together a worksheet with prompts to get the juicy conversations following and for everyone to share what makes their approach unique/ their "special sauce" as Julia likes to put it. We also touched on what challenges we face in this work. I love a bit of "real talk." It was truly inspiring to meet such a diverse group of professionals from doulas to acupuncturists, midwives, and more. All working together to support mothers in the postpartum season and a huge thank you to Julia for taking the time to meet with us (and for tolerating my rally car-style driving!) Her dedication to restoring traditional postpartum care and improving outcomes for mothers is truly inspiring. It's amazing to see how her passion has spread across the globe, reaching even our little island of Tasmania.
